Feb 18, 2022 · Overall, this was a great hike with beautiful scenery (when it was visible!), but it was definitely challenging. I'd love to come back when the weather is warmer to see what it's like under all that snow! TLDR: Total time: 5.5 hrs. Distance: ~6.5 miles. Elevation gain: 2,500'. Don't go off trail because people might follow your tracks thinking ... There is a backcountry campground at Jay Lake, consisting of tent sites, a picnic table and a composting toilet. I parked at the PCT/Commonwealth Basin parking lot, walked in the dark to the Snow Lake Trailhead, hiked to Snow Lake as the sun rose, took Rock Creek Trail down to Middlefork, then came up the Old Cascade Crest Trail to Red Pass, and went down Commonwealth …From the Alpental parking lot up to the junction with trail #1013.2 patchy snow on the trail, and areas of water. From the junction we continued on 1013 to the highpoint overlooking snow lake. This part of the hike is mostly snow covered, with a few small areas of ice. Snow lake is still 100% covered. Waterproof boots with tread is a must!

Gem Lake was absolutely worth the climb, and we stopped for a leisurely lunch to admire the view.
