Pretty sure the knives don't fan in PvE if there's just a single target. The super is just that though, super! Ed: Ophidia Spathe is my gambit exotic of choice. Knives for days; so good at taking out shielded enemies. They won't auto converge, the spread is effected by your aim.
Shards is probably better in low end content like playlist strikes or seasonal content where you can spam melee for super energy.
