Dayzsalauncher seems faster because it caches the server + modlist and it also has extra filtering. It requires the server owner to run an extra app too. Once in a while it's gets wonky and there is 0 support on the discord. Once you find a good server in either one, just favorite it and its all good.

To me the standalone is better than the mod in a lot of aspects. The lack of any kind of updates to improve pvp is the only thing that's holding the standalone back from overtaking the mod. I come from the original DayZ mod for arma 2 years ago and while I think the arma 3 version runs better most people will probably be on the standalone. I’m sure you could find some people still in arma 3 mod you’ll have better luck on the standalone. Or take the ultimate deep dive and move on to tarkov like a lot of DayZ players do.

Make sure to check the DayZ Standalone Path in the DZSA Launcher (Settings, DayZ Standalone Path, browse) and that both programs are on the same drive. Or just use the official launcher that works really good right now: Steam, Dayz, Run Dayz, in the official launcher go to Servers, find your server, join and then "Download mods and join". Do some research about the survival mods on Arma 3 before you buy it so you wont get disappointed. Arma doesnt have much going on on the survival scene but it is a great platform for a tone of things. Based on your question i would just buy DayZ. The survival arma mods are severely lacking in options and freedom compared to dayz. The Ghillie is fun and all, but I don't trust other people's rendering quality to make it very useful right now. 0.61 should be a much better place for Ghillies, or possibly with the hotfix they're working on in Experimental right now.
