I don't use Mercari but I assume it's like Poshmark in that when you get the item back you can open up your own case for the item returned damaged. Hopefully you'll also get your money back. ETA: You'll likely have to take pictures of the damage on the item, compared to your pictures in your original picture, side by side to show the difference.
