It appears that the lava needs to be a source block in order to fill cauldrons. The flowing lava never fills cauldrons regardless of the type of block above the pointed dripstone. I'm using tiles deep slate under mine and it works. I'm on Java edition. I think mine on my world still works but it is Java.

The way i do it is i go get 4 buckets of lava, make a square box type thing with cobblestone and fill the pit with 4 buckets of lava. then i take one corner and the other three fill the corner back up like it was never taken. but it doesn't work. it works fine with water! not lava. is there a different way to make a unlimited lava source?
