With greatshields you can often block entire combos. Greatshields in general are often ridiculously powerful against bosses but are often overlooked. Guard counter does stance damage. Parry breaks stance immediately. Guard counters don’t automatically open enemies to a riposte. They do a heavy amount of posture damage, which will likely break the posture of weaker enemies. But we are talking about enemies that you could guard break in DS3 with a single kick, so it’s not much easier.
