Sounds like it's time to do an internal linkage overhaul on the tractor. There's probably a worn cam follower, along with some sloppy linkage, and that's why the position control isn't working.

The lever you're referring to is probably the draft/position control lever. I'd suggest getting the original style owners manual as a beginner, then the service manual. Rick, it sounds like your hydraulics are working normal, when in the draft position the hydraulics operate differantly, they are controled by the movement of the draft spring that is attatched from the hydraulic rocker to below your seat.
