The .44 mag has a lot more energy. That matters with Grizzly Bears and large Black Bears. If you are on the east coast, it won't matter so much and even a .45 ACP with +P and Ball Ammo should do for that. The benefit of a 10mm is that you are going to get several more rounds assuming the charging bear is slow. 10mm with hard-cast rounds seems to be more than enough to punch a hole through a bear, and with the right pistol you can do that many times. A 357/44 will probably go the same, but with fewer rounds. I don’t think this is a “power” thing, it is a shot placement and depth of penetration issue.
